Roger Penske is as much a fixture of the auto racing world as any person could claim to be. At 70 years old, he’s still an effective if not brilliant leader, with his hands on the wheel of a carefully built, racing world success. You have to wonder though, if Roger Penske is getting ready to step aside and let some new talent slip into the driver’s seat. If a change in leadership fits into his immediate or mid-range plans, who might his replacement be?

Roger Penske Jr to retire from Penske Automotive Group

Penske Automotive Group, Inc., the Michigan-based U.S. automotive retailer which owns the Sytner Group in the UK, announced on Friday that its President, Roger S. Penske, Jr., the son of its chairman Roger Penske, is retiring from the company on March 31. He will move to California where he will buy four dealerships from the privately-owned Penske Motor Group. The company’s board appointed Robert H. Kurnick, Jr. as Penske’s successor; he has served in various capacities with the company since 1999, most recently as Vice Chairman.

Keeping Workers Earns a Bonus In Some Offices More Firms Like Penske Tie Top Managers’ Pay To Employee Retention

A small but growing number of companies are grading — and paying — top managers on their ability to hang on to employees.

Car retailer Penske Automotive Group Inc. tied 8% of Chief Executive Roger Penske’s 2007 bonus to holding employee turnover below 31%, according to a March proxy statement. Mr. Penske earned his $240,000 reward. The company, which owns 300 dealerships world-wide, posted 30.8% attrition in 2007, down from 31.2% a year earlier and more than 80% in 1999 when Penske Corp. acquired a controlling stake.

Penske Auto Centers Signs Long-Term Deal for Goodyear Tires

AKRON, Ohio, Aug. 19 — A long-term agreement was signed today by representatives of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and Penske Auto Centers, Inc., linking the two companies through Dec. 31, 2005 as partners in tire retailing at Penske’s 860 tire and service outlets. Goodyear has supplied tires to Penske Auto Centers since 1995 when the
chain of tire and auto repair centers was purchased from Kmart Corp. According to the agreement, Penske Auto Centers will continue to sell both Goodyear-branded tires and a new line of Penske-branded tires at the outlets. Offered as the Penske-branded Path Trac AT light truck tire and Speed Trac HP performance tire, the tires are manufactured by Goodyear’s Kelly-Springfield division.
